Note: I put 3 asterisks beside the titles I have read and recommend. I have not read all of the books I put in these lists, so be sure to check them all out!
I have neglected this website a lot in the past two months for different reasons. The most important one is that seem to suddenly have difficulties reading long books, almost nothing can retain my attention. So I mostly just read bits and pieces here and there, or short stories online, or, best of all, fairy tales. So I thought I could make this Monday's list on my most loved fairy tale retellings.
* 10 Fairy Tale Retellings that I've Loved or Find Interesting *
- Ice, by Sarah Beth Durst (East O' the Sun, West O' the Moon
- White As Snow, by Tanith Lee (Snow White)
- Briar Rose, by Jane Yolen (Sleeping Beauty)
- Wildwood Dancing, by Juliet Marillier (Twelve Dancing Princesses)
- East, by Edith Pattou (East O' the Sun, West O' the Moon)
- The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale (The Goose Girl)
- A Curse Dark As Gold, by Elixabeth C. Bunce (Rumpelstiltskin)
- Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine (Cinderella)
- Fables, by Bill Wilingham (comic book series with several fairy tales)
- The Bloody Chamber, by Angela Carter (short stories, several fairy tales)
Happy Monday!
I've read some of these--Wildwood Dancing, The Goose Girl & Ella Enchanted. :) I'll have to try some of the others; they sound interesting.
ReplyDeleteThese all look wonderful! I've had 'Ice' on my to-read list for awhile now. I studied 'The Bloody Chamber' in first year University... I love Angela Carter's writing.
ReplyDeleteJust added most of these to my reading list, wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I can't say I liked Briar Rose (even though I like Jane Yolen), but I read some of the other ones and liked them a lot :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, I ordered "The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making" and I AM IN LOVE. I just finished it yesterday - it's totally one of my favorite books now. My favorite scene is probably the bath house with Lye. Such beautiful writing. Thank you for reviewing it - I would never have known it existed if it wasn't for you!
Robin McKinley is a must! She's one of my absolute favorite authors. Beauty should be considered (the kind of companion to Rose Daughter)
